NATIONAL NEWS - Rabies cases in KZN are being reported at a rapid rate and has already claimed the life of a young boy from Empangeni.
As a result, KZN MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Super Zuma is calling on all residents, particularly in and around King Cetshwayo, to take their pets for immediate vaccination at a local vet or state vet nearest to them.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases recently confirmed that the five-year-old boy succumbed to rabies late last month (February 27).
In a statement yesterday, Zuma said the recent surge of rabies in the province is concerning.
“The department is undertaking a vaccination drive of dogs and cats in the area. This intervention seeks to reduce the prevalence of rabies within Empangeni in the King Cetshwayo District,” added Zuma.
“In efforts to combat the scourge, vaccination campaigns will be stepped up through community visits by our veterinary services to the most affected areas.”
The MEC will today pay a visit to the family of the five-year-old boy, where he will convey his condolences and further spread awareness in the area.
