NATIONAL NEWS - There is still time until Friday to register online to vote in this year’s general elections.
On Tuesday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the date of the elections as Wednesday, 29 May.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Wednesday that online voter registrations would close on Friday, February 23 once the election date is officially gazetted.
“The Electoral Commission reminds South Africans that, while the date has been set and announced, eligible voters have until Friday, 23 February to register,” it said in a statement.
“The later date is the anticipated day of proclamation of the election date.”
There apparently now are 27.6-million voters registered on the 2024 voters’ roll.
To check your registration status:
- Registered voters can visit the IEC website at www.elections.org.za to check their current registration details and voting station location.
- SMS your ID number to 32810 to receive an SMS containing the address of their voting station (charged at R1).
- Voters can also visit their local municipality office of the IEC.
- Alternatively, WhatsApp “Hi” to 0600 88 00 00, and follow the prompts.
Online registration can be done as follows:
- Visit registertovote.elections.org.za. Have your green barcoded ID, smart ID card or a temporary ID certificate at hand.
- Click “Register to Vote Now”.
- Enter your details.
- Enter the One-Time Pin sent to your cellphone.
- Search for your address, or if you are at home, use the current location on your device.
- Take a photo of your ID or submit a clear colour scan of it.
An SMS will be sent within 24 hours to confirm your successful registration.
To register to vote, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen and have a South African green barcoded identity document (ID), a smart ID card or temporary ID certificate.
- Be 16 years or older (but you will only be able to vote when you are 18 years or older).
- Register in person or online. Nobody else can do it for you.
Once you have registered to vote, you need not re-register for future elections, unless:
- You have moved house and are living in a different voting district.
- You have been affected by the re-drawing of the voting district and/or ward boundaries.
