HESSEQUA NEWS - The public is requested to be on the lookout for vulture fledglings that have left the nest during a flying exercise but couldn’t quite make it.
The only surviving and stable colony of Cape Vultures occur in the Potberg Mountains in CapeNature’s De Hoop Reserve near Bredasdorp.
Usually only one egg is laid and it takes about 53 days to hatch. During the first 110 tot 120 days they remain in the nest. When they start to learn to fly, they are extremely vulnerable.

“They not only need to leave the nest ledge high up on cliffs and fly, but they need to learn to soar and then land back on the cliff faces, sometimes on very narrow ledges,” says researcher Kevin Shaw. They sometimes end up on the ground.
