GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Pet owners across the Garden Route are being urged to keep their animals safely indoors as extremely strong winds continue to lash the area.
Wind gusts of up to 100km/h have been reported in parts of George, creating dangerous conditions for both people and animals.
Strong winds can easily frighten pets, causing them to panic, jump fences, break leashes or run into roads. Flying debris, falling branches and rough sea conditions also pose serious risks to animals left outside.
Residents are encouraged to ensure that:
• Pets are kept indoors or in secure sheltered areas.
• Gates, fences and kennels are properly secured.
• Animals have access to warm bedding and fresh water.
• Identification tags and microchip details are up to date in case pets go missing.
• Dogs are not walked during peak wind conditions unless necessary.
Loud wind noise and stormy weather can cause severe anxiety in pets, especially dogs and cats that are sensitive to noise.
Motorists are additionally urged to remain vigilant for animals that may have escaped onto roads due to damaged fencing or fear caused by the weather.
The severe weather conditions are expected to continue across parts of the Garden Route, with residents advised to stay updated on official weather warnings and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.
