Update
HEIDELBERG NEWS - The wildfire near Heidelberg in the Hessequa region has been contained around all critical infrastructure, according to the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM).
Yesterday’s firefighting teams successfully completed a 2.5km backburn along the south-western corner of the fire to protect nearby properties.
The area was closely monitored overnight, with crews continuing mop-up and patrol operations this morning to ensure stability.
An active fire line persists on the north-western side in difficult-to-access terrain.
However, officials confirm it poses no immediate threat, as no infrastructure lies in its path.
It is expected to burn out naturally against previously burned sections or be subdued by the evening rain forecast.
On the lower north-eastern flank, flames remain active but are being allowed to move under controlled conditions.
They are heading towards established containment lines and younger veld, which acts as a natural buffer.
A precautionary backburn may be initiated if needed.
Smouldering hotspots are still visible along the northern ridges, although these are deemed safe and are likely to self-extinguish due to the sparse vegetation and cooler, wetter weather expected later today.
Residents are reminded to stay alert and report any new fire outbreaks immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre on 044 805 5071 or via WhatsApp on 081 709 5193.
