SLANGRIVIER NEWS - "We wanted to inspire and encourage young minds to dream big, break boundaries, and realise their full potential," said Agnes Wewers, a clinical programme coordinator, after a successful high tea event held recently for young girls in Slangrivier.
The event was a team effort by Western Cape Government Health and Wellness, Slangrivier Primary School and Hessequa Municipality's Social Development Department.
Royalty, which was the theme of the event, was quite fitting as they were celebrating the uniqueness and beauty of these young ladies.
To stay on theme, each girl entered the venue on a red carpet and received her crown. The program was opened by Wewers, who was also the MC of the event. Various speakers encouraged and motivated the girls on the day with inspiring messages and recommendations and useful life skills for their journey ahead.
Many also shared personal life stories to inspire these young girls and emphasised that they should dream big.
Learners from Slangrivier Primary School showcased their talents by performing a song and dance item as well as reciting a beautiful poem for the girls.
"We hope that celebrating their potential we can inspire them to become leaders, innovators and change-makers of tomorrow," said Agnes.
During a health visit in August this year, it was identified that many of the young girls in the Hessequa area lack psychosocial support and face many challenges in their community. "We thought it would be a great way to celebrate them by treating these young girls to a special day," said Wewers.
Adolescence can be an exciting and overwhelming time filled with new challenges and adventures for teenagers and their parents. Whatever the challenges may be during this period, Western Cape Government Health and Wellness shares a goal with parents: to ensure that every young person gets the health care that they need to live their best, healthiest, longest life.
Western Cape Government Health and Wellness also works with other organisations – one being the NPO LoveLife which offers support to teens at schools and clinics in the province.
Youth can also access valuable information from the B-Wise programme. The website is easy to navigate via phone or computer and provides information on mental health, teenage pregnancy, family planning and STIs.
