GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Mossel Bay is gearing up to host the Ironman 70.3 on Sunday, 19 November.
During this event, 2 500 athletes will put their fitness to the test.
It is estimated the Ironman will bring a total of 8 000 visitors to town the municipality noted in a media release this week.
The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.9km swim (Santos Beach to De Bakke Beach), a 90km bike course (De Bakke to Herbertsdale – affecting Louis Fourie Road, the N2 direction Cape Town and the R327) and a 21.1km run course (De Bakke to the Point – impacting central Mossel Bay).
"We have made changes to the event this year, to lessen the impact on the public.
"However, there will be road closures and other arrangements in place that may cause inconvenience to the public.
"We request that members of the public allow extra travel time and that they practise patience, should they encounter athletes on the road," said organiser Werner Smit.
Persons travelling to or past Mossel Bay on the N2 should note:
- Lane restrictions will be implemented on the N2 to accommodate cyclists. Outer lanes are for vehicular traffic and inner lanes for athletes cycling.
- A stop-and-go will be in place at the turn-off from the N2 on to the R327 (to Herbertsdale), 3km outside Mossel Bay, in the direction of Cape Town. Traffic officials will direct traffic.
- The R327 will be closed to vehicular traffic.
- A reduced speed limit of 60km/h will be in place on both directions of the N2, from 3km outside of Mossel Bay, direction Cape Town.
- The affected times are 06:30 to 12:30.
- Traffic flow on the N2 will return to normal from 12:30.
- The R327 will reopen from 12:30.
