Update
NATIONAL NEWS - If the initial election results are any indication of what the final outcome may be when all the votes have been counted by Sunday, the ANC may lose its majority in South Africa.
By 10:40 this morning the ballots at 3 259 of the 23 293 voting districts had been counted – nearly 14%.
Nationally the ANC stood at about 42,58%, the DA at about 25,82% and the EFF in third place with 8,47%. This is in line with the Social Research Foundation’s last poll two days before the election, that said the ANC should get just 42% of the vote.
For a brand new party, MK is doing exceptionally well nationally and was in 4th place with 7,85% of the vote at 10:40. In KZN MK was in the lead with 42,31% - more than double the ANC’s support which stood at 20, 12% while the IFP stood at 16, 17%.
In the Western Cape, where nearly 17% of the votes had been counted by 10:40, the DA stood at 50,89%, the ANC at 18,85% and the PA had 12,61% of the support.
Based on these early figures election analyst Dawie Scholtz projected on X (twitter) that the Western Cape will stay blue with the DA ending up with about 55% of the total vote.
According to his projection the ANC will take 20% in the province, the PA 9%, the EFF 4%, FF Plus 2% and MK 1%. This will mean that the ANC loses 9% of its support in the Western Cape.
