HESSEQUA NEWS - The Karate Association Western Cape (KAWC) hosted a successful championship over the weekend of 20 to 21 November at the Wynberg Military Sports Hall.
This provincial event was open to the top-ranked registered athletes from all the karate-affiliated districts in the Western Cape.
Eden Karate also entered a team of nine athletes into this event, representing the Eden Karate Federation against the rest of the districts in the province.
The Eden Karate athletes did themselves proud at the championships, competing against the best of Western Cape's elite karate athletes.
Results
• Ancha Adams from the Heidelberg Karate Kyousei dojo won bronze in her kumite division, Juniors 16-17 Female kumite -59kg.
• Sue-Ellis Gysman from the Jikkai-Do karate dojo in Oudtshoorn won a gold medal in her event in the Juniors 16-17 Female kumite +59kg.
• Sheree Samson also from Jikkai-Do karate dojo won silver in her division, Under 21 years Female kumite +68kg.
• Luiciano Samson won a silver medal in his division, Under 21 Male kumite -75kg, as well as a bronze in the Senior Male kumite -75kg.
• Daetania de Laan and Geo Bruintjies won gold in the kumite division, Under 21 Female kumite -55kg and Cadet Boys 14-15 years -70kg, respectively.
• Sarah-Jane Lewis won a bronze in her division Girls Cadet kumite 14-15 years, -47kg.
• Heinrique-Pete Samson won a silver medal in the Boys kumite 10-11 years, +45kg. They are all from the Jikkai-Do karate dojo in Oudtshoorn.
Jodin Olckers from the Heidelberg Karate Kyousei dojo competed in the Boys kata 12-13 years and Boys kumite 12-13 years division. He did not receive a medal, but the experience gained for him after a break in competing was invaluable to his progress in the All Styles karate.
Competing at the highest level provincially was difficult at most and came with its own challenges like athletes that had to vacate the venue as soon as they had completed their division. And of course competing in either kumite or kata with a mask on and constant sanitising during the various bouts.
“A special note of mention is deserved of three officials, who officiated at the event. Sensei Avril Maarman had to step in as coach, and what a great job she did. Nikki Smith and Alana Adams officiated as table officials at the championship. A huge thanks goes to them for representing the Eden region on that level," said Peter Adams, chairman/president of Eden Karate Federation.
“Eden Karate is extremely proud of their achievements and wish them well with their preparations for the national championships in 2022, depending on where we are as a nation with regards to Covid-19.”
