FOOTBALL NEWS - The race to win the 2023 KLFA Domestic League title is going right down to the wire as the league's top two, FC Rebels and Young Boys, reach the final stretch of their fixtures.
Both sides, along with third-placed La Liga, have been the forces to reckon with throughout the season with FC Rebels by and large leading the league for the bulk of the season.
The latest round of fixtures was played last weekend, from 12 to 14 August, and there was a lot on the line. Rebels had three games lying in wait for them, but Young Boys only two. One of the matches was, in fact, between the two sides vying for the league title.
Rebels set their fine weekend in motion on Friday 12 August when they defeated the struggling Young Chiefs 6-1. This left two matches for them to play on Sunday, firstly against Mthatha City and later in the day against Young Boys. The latter meanwhile were up against Crossroads in the morning before facing Rebels in the battle for the title.
Rebels won their first game 2-0 and Young Boys won theirs 2-1, setting up a tense and tight second game of the day for both teams.
The game lived up to the hype and the two teams waged war on one another, battling hard from the first to the final whistle. Young Boys just couldn't hold on however and FC Rebels managed to clinch a tense 1-0 win to put themselves in prime position at the top of the log with less than a handful of games left to play.
FC Rebels have African Eagles and Young Stars left to play - by no means easy fixtures. Young Boys still need to face Richmond City, Voota and Future Stars, that are also games not to scoff at.
There's a 10-point gap between the two title contenders at the moment, and if Rebels lose their remaining matches but Young Boys win all of theirs, it will be Young Boys walking away top of the log at the end of the season.
Rebels only need one more win though to put the league out of reach of the men from Rheenendal, and the trophy will then travel back to Hornlee with FC Rebels.
