Eastern Cape police said a couple had been hijacked by two men while dropping off a passenger at a garage in Plettenberg Bay just before midnight on Saturday July 30. They were on their way to George.
The suspects allegedly took control of the vehicle and drove towards Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkholi said the suspects however crashed into the back of another vehicle near Thornhill on the N2 and fled the scene.
The suspects later allegedly asked for a lift from three people - two men and a woman - at a tavern in the Loerie area and set off towards Port Elizabeth. During the journey the suspects allegedly hijacked the second vehicle.
