LOCAL NEWS - Residents across the Garden Route may want to keep the umbrellas handy this week, with increasingly wet conditions forecast ahead of the weekend.

Current forecasts agree that rain is likely in several parts of the region, but they differ considerably on the timing and amount of rainfall. 

This is particularly noticeable in the longer-range forecasts for Saturday, 19 September, and Sunday, 20 September.

One forecast source currently predicts heavy rain for parts of the Garden Route, while other models are considerably more conservative. 

This means claims of around 60mm for George should be treated as a possible model prediction rather than a confirmed rainfall total.

George could see several wet days

The latest forecast for George points to a run of unsettled weather from the middle of the week, with periods of rain expected before conditions become wetter again towards the weekend.

The current forecast indicates occasional rain on Saturday and periods of rain on Sunday, with temperatures remaining relatively cool.

Another current forecast also shows showers around Saturday, although its projected rainfall totals are considerably lower than 60mm.

In other words, rain looks increasingly likely, but the 60mm figure should not yet be treated as a prediction set in stone.

Knysna forecasts show the biggest variation

Knysna illustrates just how quickly the weather models can diverge.

One current forecast predicts only light rainfall around the weekend, with about 1mm on Saturday and little or no rain on Sunday.

Another model is considerably wetter, forecasting as much as 100–150mm on Saturday, followed by another 5–10mm on Sunday.

A separate seven-day forecast sits somewhere between the two, showing showers on Saturday with around 2–4mm in the morning, about 5mm in the afternoon and further showers later.

That enormous spread is a useful reminder that longer-range rainfall forecasts can change substantially as the weather system gets closer.

Mossel Bay could also get wet

Mossel Bay is similarly unsettled in the current forecasts.

The Weather Network is currently showing showers on Saturday, with a projected 40–50mm, followed by much drier conditions on Sunday.

Other forecasting data is far less dramatic, putting Saturday's rainfall at only a few millimetres and Sunday at around 5–14mm.

The common thread is therefore not necessarily the amount of rain, but the likelihood of unsettled conditions.

Plettenberg Bay looks wetter on Sunday

Plettenberg Bay is currently expected to escape the heaviest rain on Saturday, with showers possible and relatively small rainfall totals.

Sunday looks wetter, however, with one current forecast indicating a high probability of rain and between roughly 5mm and 15mm through the day.

The forecast is therefore more suggestive of a wet Sunday than a washout across the entire weekend.

So, is 60mm coming?

Possibly - but it is too early to say with confidence.

The current models demonstrate why weather forecasts, particularly rainfall totals several days ahead, need to be treated as evolving guidance rather than a guarantee.

The difference between forecasts for Knysna alone ranges from virtually no rain to more than 100mm for Saturday. George's forecasts are also currently nowhere near unanimous on the amount of rainfall expected.

For now, the safest conclusion is that the Garden Route should prepare for a wetter-than-usual weekend, while residents wait for the forecast to settle before making firm assumptions about rainfall totals.

And then there is the Garden Route weather lottery

Anyone who has lived on the Garden Route for long enough will know that a forecast can sometimes be less of a promise and more of a suggestion.

A weather app can confidently announce 60mm of rain, prompting residents to cancel the braai, bring in the washing, secure the pot plants and start checking whether the gutters are clear.

Then Saturday arrives.

The clouds take one look at George, Knysna or Plett, change their minds and deliver three drops - preferably just after you have put the washing outside.

Or, just as easily, the opposite happens: the forecast says “a few showers” and suddenly everyone is wondering whether they should have invested in a canoe.

That is the Garden Route for you: pack the umbrella, keep the sunscreen nearby and check the forecast again tomorrow!
