HESSEQUA NUUS - As lockdown drags on, the disposable income of many pet owners has dwindled to such an extent that they are not able to provide food for their animals any more.
Volunteers from the non-profit organisation Community Animal Rescue Society (CARS) under the leadership of Sandra Williams Lotz from Riversdale have been providing invaluable assistance in this regard.
According to their Stilbaai coordinator, Nicole Botha, they compile lists of people in need with the help of members of the different communities in Hessequa. They buy pet food in bulk and make it up into smaller packets, which are delivered as needed - usually about once a week.
In the Stilbaai area, their drivers are Xristaki Mouchtouris and Andrew Sprackett, who also keep their eyes peeled for pets in need while driving to their drop off points.
They also provide pet beds and blankets as far as possible. Where animals are found in undesirable circumstances, they are removed to foster homes and any veterinary costs are covered. Their regular sterilisation clinics will resume again after lockdown.
They are very dependent on donations and as an NPO they can issue article 18A tax certificates for financial donations. In Stilbaai they have trolleys in OK Grocer and Spar where people can leave pet food and blankets.
Anybody who would like to make a donation can contact Lotz on 082 962 1831 for banking details or for the contact details of their local coordinator.
