ENTERTAINMENT NEWS - Talented playwright, performer and poet Jonathan Khumbu Nkala will be giving his acclaimed one-man show, The Crossing, at the George Arts Theatre on Sunday, 25 April at 16.00.
The Crossing is the inspirational story of a man's journey from Zimbabwe to South Africa in search of a better life.
His desperate quest saw him illegally and dangerously crossing the border into South Africa ten years ago and overcoming incredible challenges including poverty, malnutrition, crossing crocodile-infested waters, racial abuse and violence.
The Crossing, previously performed in George in 2018 has been extended in response to audiences' frequent question: “What happened next?”
During this performance, the rest of Nkala's experiences are told as he faces new challenges in Cape Town.
The Crossing does two things: it brings home the plight of immigrants in South Africa and reminds one just how resilient the human spirit can be.
"It is raw and emotionally charged, but it is also humorous," Nkala explains. Nkala has performed the play in theatres, schools and universities around South Africa and Zimbabwe and has toured with it in six states of America.
He has been unable to perform any of his plays for some time due to serious illness, from which he is now fully recovered, and more recently Covid-19 prevented it.
The performance at the George Arts Theatre on 25 April marks the beginning of his return to the stage.
