Update
HEIDELBERG NEWS - Significant progress has been made overnight in the battle against the wildfire near Duiwenhoks Dam outside Heidelberg, with all firelines successfully contained.
Firefighting teams worked through the night conducting extensive mopping-up operations, which continue this morning.
The backburn initiated yesterday has held well, with no spot fires detected and no infrastructure currently at risk.
Only minor smouldering pockets remain deep within the fire perimeter, but officials say these pose no immediate threat.
Aerial firefighting resources remain on standby and will be deployed should flare-ups occur in inaccessible terrain.
Mayor Marais Kruger expressed his gratitude to all involved, saying: “The spirit of cooperation by crews from the Garden Route District Municipality, Hessequa Municipality, and CapeNature has ensured firefighting operations have been dealt with successfully.”
Residents are urged to remain vigilant. If you spot a veldfire or wildfire, report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or WhatsApp: 081 709 5193.
