It’s warning school leavers about fake institutions, urging them to verify with the department before enrolling at colleges.
Those who have already been scammed have been urged to take up the matter at the small claims court for amounts of up to R15,000, or alternatively approach the legal aid office.
The department's Dr Shaheeda Essack says, “There are many colleges that are accredited with the Sector Education and Training Authority. They hide behind that and offer a range of unregistered programmes and that’s why we’re saying for students to check with the department.”
