A police spokesperson, Captain Ursula Roelofse, says the man was shot and killed on Sunday night.
His wife was injured and taken to a hospital in Port Elizabeth. She is in a high care unit and her condition is stable.
A resident of a neighbouring farm said on Monday morning that she and her family were caring for the couple's three daughters, aged three, five and eight years.
Police were still at the scene this morning.
