Visit Hessequa
|
The name Hessequa, meaning ‘people of the trees’, refers to the tribe of Khoi-khoi people that used to live in this beautiful region.
Hessequa nestles at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains with boundaries stretching along the Southern Cape coast from the Breede River to as far as Gouritsmond and enjoys a moderate year-round climate. The winter rains fall between May and August.
This is a region rich in natural beauty with rolling hills of pristine limestone and mountain fynbos, dune thicket and Renosterveld and to the north, surrounded by rugged mountains and indigenous forests.
The Municipal area of Hessequa includes the surrounding towns of Riversdale, Heidelberg, Albertinia, Witsand, Gouritsmond, Slangrivier and Stilbaai.
Riversdale is the ‘capital’ of the region and is a three hour scenic drive (305km) from Cape Town along the N2 national road.
Hessequa offers visitors a unique experience; endless stretches of unspoilt beaches (ideal for surfing and fishing), secluded camping spots, whale watching and other outdoor adventure venues offer something for everyone.
As part of the World Heritage Site Cape Floral Kingdom, the region is rich in fauna (small game) and flora. The Big 5 (lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhinoceros) can be seen at the local game farm near Albertinia.
Quality wines are produced in Hessequa and wine tasting has become a popular tourist activity.
Annual festivals hosted in the Hessequa region include the Baby Whale Festival in Witsand, the Aloe Festival in Albertinia, the ‘Stilbaai Pampoenfees’ and the Heidelberg Agriculture Show.
